A deficiency in Vitamin C will result in a deficiency in the healing, glandular, immune and regenerative abilities of the body. It plays a major role in the formation and maintenance of bones and tissues. Vitamin C may help prevent cancer and arteriosclerosis. Classic Vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) results in gum disease, loss of teeth, bad breath, weakened bones, bleeding and general debility. Although dogs and cats produce Vitamin C there may be a need to supplement additional levels of Vitamin C during times of stress and disease. Increased intake has been shown to help animals with allergies, infections, heart disease, periodontal disease, osteoarthritis and wounds. Vitamin C may protect the body against heavy metals and the side effects of cortisone.
The antiviral dose of Vitamin C has been reported to be as high as 1 gram / lb. in some cases.
Vitamin C may cause diarrhea when added at too high of a rate in the diet and should be fed to gut tolerance levels.
